Is this perception or reality? Is it neglect or disinterest on the part of the girls? Even the "well-paying trades still dominated by men" have a salary differential that favors male workers and women, in spite of in-roads into technical & male-dominated fields, still earn less than men for equal work. Could it be that girls wonder why they should work so hard for 3/4 pay?
