So… does this surprise anyone who actually works in a public school in the American South or West? I don’t think so. The only thing surprising to me is that policies and policy makers are still wearing blinders that make them think kids have 2 parents, 1 of whom stays home to care for them when school is out, and they actually have meals after they leave the building. We wonder why test scores are low but don’t bother connecting that to the high number of students who come to school hungry. We want to punish teachers for low-achieving students without looking at the underlying cause of that underachievement. Still, to see it in black and white is a real eye-opener for those who may not have realized the state we’re in.
