The School Libraries section of the 2013 State of America’s Libraries Report from the American Library Association provides an update on the crisis facing school libraries and the decline in staffing of school librarians.

Susan Grigsby‘s insight:

According to this article, "The number of school librarians declined more than other school staff from 2007 to 2011 with the exception of instruction coordinators and supervisors." It seems that in this age of expected information literacy, college & career readiness, and pushes for a higher graduation rate, librarians have become more expendable than the elementary school art teacher. Do they not realize there are Common Core Standards that cannot be met without the direct intervention of a professionally trained librarian? When will the "R" be put back in STEM? If kids can’t/won’t read (and that is certainly NOT the entire scope of the school librarian) then how will they complete a science project or read a math problem? It takes a village…
